    What you get

Everything you need, in one workspace

    Business app account

Free and phone-based, with a public profile, catalog, greetings, away messages, and labels.

    Cloud API account

Meta-hosted server-to-server access with no device cap, billed per conversation.

    On-Premises account

Self-hosted endpoints for data-residency and compliance, same conversation pricing.

    Profile + verification

Business name, logo, hours, address, and a green-tick verification path via Meta Business Manager.

    Team access limits

The app is built for one person with no roles; the API unlocks unlimited agents via a platform.

    Upgrade path

Move from app to API by deleting the app account and porting the number — Greenbubble guides it.

    How it works

From setup to sent in a few moves

    1. 01

      Start with the app

Create a free WhatsApp Business account with a dedicated number and complete your profile.

    2. 02

      Assess your team

If more than a couple of people reply, or you need automation, the app will not be enough.

    3. 03

      Verify Meta Business Manager

For the API, verify your business and choose a number not active on the consumer or Business app.

    4. 04

      Choose Cloud or On-Prem

Most teams pick Cloud API; regulated enterprises with residency needs choose On-Premises.

    Deep dive

    The three account types, compared

WhatsApp Business account: types, limits, and when to upgrade

Three flavours of WhatsApp Business account exist. They are not interchangeable. Here's a clear breakdown.

    The three types

    1. WhatsApp Business app (free)

    • Install on iOS or Android.
    • Single phone number, built for one person.
    • Free to use. No Meta conversation fees.
    • Best for: solopreneurs, very small shops, simple 1:1 conversations.
    • Limits: no automation beyond canned greetings, no bulk sends at scale, no CRM hooks.

    2. WhatsApp Business API (Cloud API, hosted)

    • Server-to-server. No phone app required once set up.
    • One phone number per account. Unlimited devices via your software (e.g. Greenbubble).
    • Per-conversation fees by Meta, charged for business-initiated messages.
    • Best for: medium and large businesses, customer support teams, transactional messaging.
    • Requires: verified Meta Business Manager, approved phone number, pre-approved templates.

    3. WhatsApp Business API (On-Premises, self-hosted)

    • Same as Cloud API but you host the Webhook + REST endpoints on your own infrastructure.
    • Same Meta conversation fees.
    • Best for: enterprises with strict data-residency or compliance requirements.
    • Requires: same as Cloud API plus engineering to run and maintain.

Which one is "the" WhatsApp Business account?

All three are. The account is defined by the phone number and the Meta Business Manager behind it, not by the software in front of it. What changes is how messages are sent and who can send them: one person on a phone, or a platform acting for a team.

    What the account includes

Whichever type you choose, the account carries a business identity:

    • Business profile — name, logo, category, description, hours, address or service area, website.
    • Catalog — optional product listings with images and prices.
    • Verification badge — available on the API and Business app once Meta confirms your business.
    • Templates — required for business-initiated API messages; not applicable to the free app.

    Display name rules

Your display name is reviewed against your business identity. It should match your brand as customers know it, avoid generic words like "Support" alone, and not imply an affiliation you do not have. A rejected display name is one of the most common reasons an API launch slips.

    When to upgrade

    SymptomMove to
You reply to customers from your personal phoneBusiness app

You send the same transactional message (order, shipping) 100+ times a dayAPI
You want to run abandoned-cart flowsAPI
You need audit logs and role-based accessAPI + shared inbox
You operate in finance or healthcare with strict data residencyOn-Premises API

    A more honest trigger point

Volume is a lagging indicator. The earlier signals are: a second person answering the same number, a customer asking a question one agent cannot answer because they cannot see the history, or a manager wanting a number for first-response time. When any of those appears, the app has become the bottleneck.

Matching the account to the team size

A useful rule of thumb: one to two people, app. Three to ten people, Cloud API with a shared inbox. Ten-plus people, Cloud API with roles, SLAs, and analytics — and consider On-Premises only if a regulator or data-residency rule demands it. The account type should follow the team, not the other way around.

Questions that reveal the right fit

    • Do two or more people need to answer the same number? If yes, the app will not work well.
    • Do you need to prove who sent a message? If yes, you need an audit log, which means the API.
    • Do you send the same notification repeatedly? If yes, templates on the API are the answer.
    • Do you have a regulator dictating where data lives? If yes, On-Premises may be required.
    • Is this a one-person shop with occasional chats? If yes, stay on the free app.

What Greenbubble adds on top of the API

    • Unlimited agents instead of a per-device cap
    • Roles and assignments so the right person handles the right conversation
    • SLAs to measure first-response and resolution time
    • Audit log for compliance and review
    • CRM sync so WhatsApp conversations appear alongside email, calls, and meetings
    • Templates and bulk sends for promotional and utility messages
    • Multi-channel so WhatsApp sits alongside Instagram, Facebook, Telegram, and web chat

    Migrating between account types

Moving from the free app to the API is a one-way door for a given number: a number cannot run both at once. The practical steps:

    1. Confirm your Meta Business Manager and business verification are complete.
    2. Export the contacts and chats you want to keep — WhatsApp does not carry history over automatically.
    3. Delete the number from the WhatsApp Business app.
    4. Register the number to the API through your platform.
    5. Rebuild templates and automation in the new workspace.

Plan a short overlap where possible, and tell frequent customers the number is staying the same so they are not confused.

    Common pitfalls

    • Assuming history transfers. It does not. Export first.
    • Running the app and API on one number. Not possible; pick one.
    • Skipping business verification. It blocks templates and limits sending.
    • Using a personal number for business. It cannot be verified properly and is hard to hand over.
    • Ignoring the 24-hour window. Business-initiated messages need templates; user-initiated windows are free.

    FAQ

What is a WhatsApp Business account?

A WhatsApp Business account is a separate account type from a personal WhatsApp account. It offers a business profile (logo, hours, description), product catalog, automated messages, and labels. Available as a free app or paid API access.

How is a WhatsApp Business account different from a regular WhatsApp account?

Personal WhatsApp accounts are designed for friends and family. WhatsApp Business accounts add a public business profile, catalog, automated greetings, away messages, and quick replies. They are still free to use.

Do I need a Facebook Business Manager to create a WhatsApp Business account?

For the WhatsApp Business app, no. For the WhatsApp Business API (Cloud API or On-Premises), yes — you need a verified Meta Business Manager and a unique phone number.

Can I have both a WhatsApp Business app and a WhatsApp Business API account on the same number?

No. A phone number can host either the WhatsApp Business app OR the WhatsApp Business API, not both. Migrating from app to API requires deleting the app account first.

How many WhatsApp Business accounts can I have?

You can have one WhatsApp Business app per phone number and one WhatsApp Business API account per phone number, but you can have as many phone numbers as you want under one Meta Business Manager.

Can I convert my personal WhatsApp account to a WhatsApp Business account?

Yes. The WhatsApp Business app offers a conversion path that keeps your chats and contacts while adding a business profile. Note that a number already on the consumer app cannot simultaneously be on the API.

Does a WhatsApp Business account get a verified badge?

A green verified badge is available once Meta confirms your business identity, typically through business verification in Meta Business Manager. It applies to the API and can appear on the Business app.

Can one Meta Business Manager hold multiple WhatsApp numbers?

Yes. A single verified Meta Business Manager can own multiple phone numbers, each with its own WhatsApp Business account. This is common for companies with per-region or per-brand numbers.
